Digital Sustainable Tourism: Innovation and Sustainability in Puerto Nariño, Amazonas

Puerto Nariño's digital tool is now a success story in digital sustainable tourism in Colombia. It’s not just a website. It’s the result of a community-driven co-creation process that brings together sustainability, technology, and community in the heart of the Amazon.

This project originated from the Puerto Nariño Sustainable Tourism Living Lab, an initiative that is part of the Tourism 4.0 program led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism (MinCIT), Fontur, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Univalle Foundation.

Furthermore, its development demonstrates how digital transformation can strengthen sustainable destinations without compromising their cultural identity or environmental commitment.

A Living Laboratory to Transform Tourism in the Amazon

The Puerto Nariño Living Lab was conceived as a space for real-world experimentation. There, the community, local authorities, entrepreneurs, and experts worked together to design innovative solutions for the destination.

In this context, Simbiotic developed the destination’s official digital tool:

However, the process was more important than the result. The tool was developed in collaboration with the community, validating content, prioritizing local experiences, and ensuring consistency with the region’s sustainability model.

Official release date: January 27

The program concluded on January 27 in Puerto Nariño. On that occasion, the team returned to the area to officially hand over the tool to the community.

This was a pivotal moment. It wasn't just about launching a digital product. It marked the culmination of a process of learning, collaboration, and community building.

In addition, it enabled tourism stakeholders to learn how to use the platform to promote their services and experiences.

Presentation at ANATO 2026: National Visibility

The program was later presented at the fair ANATO 2026, one of the country's most important tourist events.

The following stood out in this scenario:
• The results of the Tourism 4.0 program
• The winners of InnovaT360
• Simbiotic's involvement
• The Case of the Puerto Nariño Living Laboratory
• And the digital tool as a tangible result of the process

As a result, Puerto Nariño has evolved from a local pilot project into a national leader in sustainable tourism innovation.

A digital tool aligned with sustainability

Puerto Nariño's digital tool does more than just promote the destination. It is also designed according to clear sustainability principles:

🌱 Green infrastructure

It is hosted on a green server that reduces its environmental impact and offsets emissions.

📲 Offline access

It allows you to download content for offline use. This is essential in areas with limited connectivity.

♿ Accessibility and Inclusion

It is designed to be accessible to people with disabilities.

🌎 Local Economy and Culture

It highlights local businesses, community initiatives, and cultural heritage. In this way, it strengthens the local economy.

🤝 Community co-creation

It was built in collaboration with the community, local authorities, and tourism stakeholders.

📄 Less paper, more care

Reduce printed materials and promote responsible tourism communication.

As a result, technology becomes an ally of the region rather than a threat to its identity.

Regional innovation with a real impact

The Puerto Nariño Living Lab demonstrates that Tourism 4.0 can be effectively implemented in ecologically sensitive destinations.

The digital tool created by Simbiotic is, therefore, an example of how innovation can adapt to the local context, respect local culture, and generate sustainable economic value. It serves as a replicable model for other destinations in Colombia and Latin America.

When technology, sustainability, and community come together, the result is more than just a web platform. It is a concrete step toward regenerative tourism.

At Simbiotic, we believe that innovation should serve the local community. And Puerto Nariño is proof that it is indeed possible.
